The Distance Between Stories.

Some places become part of you long before you understand them.

Growing up in Ikere Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria, I saw a White Garment church occupy my grandfather's old cocoa store directly opposite our family home. It was always there. I could see it from our windows. Its songs drifted into the house with the evening air. People in white gathered at dawn and disappeared again at dusk. Yet, for all its closeness, it remained a place I knew more through fragments than experience.

For years, I watched from across the road.

When I returned as a documentary photographer, I realised I wasn't chasing answers. I was returning to a place that had quietly shaped my imagination, trying to understand something that had always been in front of me, yet somehow remained beyond reach.

The Distance Between Stories is about that return.

The work moves through mountain prayer grounds, candlelit vigils, quiet rituals, and moments that disappear almost as quickly as they happen. Across southwestern Nigeria, many White Garment churches pray on rocky hills and mountains. They leave the noise below in search of silence, where the landscape becomes part of worship itself. The rocks, the wind and the darkness are not just scenery. They are part of the experience.

I never wanted to explain this world from the outside. I wanted to stay close enough to feel its rhythm. The glow of candles against white garments. Smoke dissolving into the night. Hands lifted before sunrise. Faces appearing and disappearing in the half-light. These were the moments that stayed with me long after I lowered the camera.

Making these photographs changed the way I remembered home. It made me realise how much of our understanding is inherited, built from stories, glances and assumptions collected over time. Returning allowed me to stand inside those stories instead of beside them, to listen before trying to interpret what I was seeing.

In the end, this project is less about certainty than closeness. It lives in the distance between memory and reality, between what we inherit and what we discover for ourselves.
